What is this?

This is an app that tells you how many bridges you cross on any route that starts and ends in Allegheny County. It is using a dataset from PennDOT combined with the Google Directions API to make a best guess about which bridges you will cross over or under on a given route.

Currently it only includes bridges in Allegheny County that existed as of August 29, 2021, the day PennDOT last updated the publicly-available dataset

If you would like to see the source code or make your own version of this, it is available on Glitch at https://glitch.com/~bad-bridges

Why did you make this?

On January 28, 2022, the Fern Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh's East End collapsed. It had last been inspected the previous September and marked as "structurally deficient" and in "poor" condition. The bridge had also been reported to the city as a concern as early as 2018.

There are currently 220 bridges in Allegheny County which are also rated "poor" and have been deemed "structurally deficient". I created this as a way for me to find out which routes around Pittsburgh take me over or near one of these bridges.

Who are you?

I'm a Pittsburgh resident; I am in no way affiliated with PennDOT, the City of Pittsburgh, or Allgheny County governments. I created this for "fun" in my free time using publicly available data.

Can you add X feature to it?

Maybe! If you have ideas, feel free to reach out on Twitter. I currently have plans to add the following to it at some vague point in the future:
